If you need to shrink your image to be EXACTLY 600 kb, here's a trick for doing it in Photoshop (a similar method could be used in GIMP I would suppose):

(1) Open the image in photoshop, and save it in some format that uses compression (use jpeg if you aren't sure).

(2) Close the document, then look to see what the filesize is. For example, suppose it's 2 mb. Convert the size from mb to kb by multiplying by 1000 (in this case, 2 mb = 2000 kb).

(3) Reopen the image in Photoshop, and choose "Image Size" from the "Image" menu.

(4) Once you get the "Image Size" dialog, UNCHECK the "Resample Image" checkbox, then change the resolution to your actual filesize (in this case 2000). Provided you have UNCHECKED the "Resample Image" checkbox, this will NOT change your filesize, however you will see some numbers change. Don't worry.

(5) Now, CHECK the "Resample Image" checkbox.

(6) This time, with the checkbox checked, change the resolution to your actual filesize (in this case 600). Click "OK" to exit the dialog, and you should see your image shrink.

Now save the image with a new filename (use "save as..."), and check your filesize. It should be approximately 600 kb.

Online Photo Size Decrease

If you have a photo editing lab like PictureIt 6.0, 7.0, PictureIt Publishing, or Adobe Photo Shop you can decrease the size. Unless you're making posters, you might want it a little smaller than that. Most of mine are 150 KB or less. You can also set your camera to smaller image file size. I set mine at 640 X 480.

First, make sure your image has been saved in a .jpg format. Once saved in that format, most image programs apply a little .jpg compression which will greatly reduce the byte size.

A good FREE program to use is IrFanView, which can be downloaded from:

www.irfanview.com

If you cannot or don't want to download any software to your PC, go to:

www.myimager.com

It is an online photo editor. Keep in mind you CANNOT store your images on their site. But you can edit your images... lighten/darken, rotate, convert to .jpg format, etc. Once you have completed your editing, save the image to your PC and use the edited image to where ever you need/want to display it.

Also, the lower the kbyte size of your image the faster it will load up on your PC, the net, etc. Try to keep the image byte size under 100kb. With online sites like eBay, etc., most images are under 75kb.

who told/taught me this? this lady at image-help@pongo.net. She is recommended by eBay for image assistance.

Yeah well, there can be several methods and tools for this, but if your are not particular on "exactly 600 KB", there is a straight-forward method.
If the image is in an uncompressed format (like bmp), simply load it in a photo editing software like MS Photo Editor, the save it in jpeg format (in the "save as" dialog box, select the destination format as jpeg/jpg).
If you are not satisfied with the result (or your original image is already in jpeg/jpg format), in the "save as" dialog, when you select format as "jpeg", you get to modify the "quality factor", just decrease it and save - the lesser the quality factor, the smaller the new file is.
