I am now a green card guy in US. I plan to go back my original country (Hong Kong) for more than a year. I visited INS site, they say that you have to get a re-entry permit if you wish to come back more than 1 year but not greater than 2 year. Ok my questions is if I dont plan to get a re-entry permit, whatis the maximum days I need to come back US in order to keep my green card. I heard many people say is 6 month, but I visited INS site and say is 1 year. SO i kinda confused.

The reason i dont want to apply is that I know once 4 year of last 5 year if you not in US, they will issue u re-entry permit for one year only. ANd they ask lot of question of why you not coming back

SO who can help me with this question....

I need someone professional from this field.

Officially, you can stay out of the US for up to 365 days and not lose your status. However, if the CBP officer at the port of entry believes that you are no longer resident in the US, he can take your card at any time.

If you are a resident of the US, you are expected to reside there.
