I need a place that has a good selection but isn't so expensive like Donovan's. The right place will have a wide range of scotches, including some that are a bit hard to find. I'm still a novice, but yesterday I had my first Islay scotch (Lagavulin 16?) and it was like a new world opened up for me.

Donovan's? I don't think you could have picked a more expensive place. Try one of the pubs in the Gaslamp. The Stingaree bar might be well stocked, but it's uber -trendy (plus being in the Gaslamp) so it could possibly compete with Donovan's. You might also try the Butcher Shop in Clairemont Mesa.

If you like Islay malts, try Laphroaig (arguably the gold standard of Islays...also the most intensely flavored) and Ardberg.

Labor Day weekend, the SCA does a camping weekend in Potrero and I hear that they might be doing a Scotch tasting event there. If you don't mind schlepping out to the desert and hanging out with a bunch of medieval reenactors, could be fun...and tasty.

Good scotch selections go along with good (and expensive) bars. Cheap bars won't stock many single malts, unfortunately.

Places to not try:
1. Hotel bars
2. Any places that have a cigar smoking area
3. Any place with a dance floor

I'd try to look for restaurant bars in the 3 star scale.

Lagavulin is good, but whatever I try, I always end up going back to Macallan 12. Great scotch, reasonable price. Move up from there is Dalwhinne.

Go to Beverages & More (www.bevmo.com). They actually have a decent selection of single malts and blends, more than enough to keep your education rolling along. I would also suggest visiting www.klwines.com. They have an extensive selection of whiskey (I know the buyer) and good comments for each one.

Is there a reason you just don't have it at home?

Just find out what kind Donovan's is using and purchase it.

much less costly.
good luck
