The other day I made a turkey sandwich. I didn't realize how quickly deli meats expire. Anyways, the exp date was August 11th and I ate a sandwich out of the meat on Aug 14th! I did heat the meat up til it was steaming hot. It didn't seem to have a bad taste. Shew, I feel like an idiot, as OC as I have been about bacteria and stuff, you would think I would have checked the stinking date on the turkey meat. OKay, have any of you ever done this? What do you all think?? Is this worth bringing up to the OB?? Should I get started on some anti-biotics??

It's not worth mentioning, first off the expiration date is there to tell the store how long it can stay on the shelf, not necessarily that it will be bad by that date, second you did heat it, so that would have killed any bacteria that may have begun to grow after you opened the package.
If it was only 3 days past the expiration date, and it didn't look or smell funny, you are fine.

Your fine, don't sweat it. You can eat strait mold and not get sick, it really depends on what dieseases or bacteria is in it. 3 days is still within decent time period. Hey, a week and a half past is fine in most occasions, it only tastes/smells bad.

Try not to eat expired meat, but for the most part, unless you just ate a piece of month old chicken(chicken gets the worst past date) I wouldn't worry. If you feel worried still, chug a glass or two of milk, and maybe get a few vitamins in your stream. Only worry if you start puking. Otherwise, in most cases it actaully increases your imune system.

[edit] A crap, for some reason I didn't realize what forum I was in. Pardon me, and ignore my advice. =)

I don't think that I would worry to much about it if you dont feel sick or if the meat did not taste bad! If it would relax you then you could ask the doctor but I think that you will be ok cause when ur pregnant then ur boby fight off stuff like that before it has a chance to harm you or the baby! good luck and congrats on the little one!

Heating Turkey (especially in a Microwave) will make the bacteria grow even faster, so cold would have been better. Don't worry... if it had been bad you could be dead now. Botulism can kill you within 6 hours. Just a little bad and you would have gotten a headache quick followed by the runs.

I think you are thinking of Listeria which is usually from eating deli meats thats why they dont recommend you eat it in your pregnacy (I still had to have my ham and cheese sandwichs when I was pregnant)....I would definitely mention it to the doctor but I am sure you have nothing to worry about.

Good Luck :-)

I WOULD mention it to the OB. Listeria is a very serious problem for the baby and your OB should have told you not to eat deli meats, soft cheeses, unpasteurized dairy products, or cabbage.
