I used to be scared shitless after scary movies, like crap, the bad guy is going to get me while I am sleeping or something. Now I just sleep like a baby after a scary movie. Even after supernatural movies---like religious ones...

What's weird though, is that this fear stopped in me, and allowed me to sleep better at night mind you, when I stopped beleiving in God...

is this not strange? Now I feel empowered. I don't feel scared anymore about myself or my soroundings at night. I feel at peace, because I don't have to be scared of being naughty with God and he punishing me, or being bad and the devil taking me....Its just me, and myself....and this gives me peace...

even dying and not having an afterlife, awkwardly, gives me peace...

have people had similar experiences?

Its almost like I have made peace with the darkness....like..slowly, but surely, the darkness has assimilated me, I am part of it, therefore I have nothing to fear.

This question caught my attention because a close friend of mine who is also a Christian kind of expressed something along these lines. She's not an athiest, but she's not really active in any church or anything. Her hubby's not a Christian. I pray that she returns to her "first love" of faith in the Lord Jesus.
I don't know what the peace you're feeling is about. Is it really peace? Will it be long-lasting or is it temporal? I have placed my hope and faith in Jesus Christ. I realize that in Jesus the victory is won already, but in this life we may have to face spiritual battles. It is not against flesh and blood we battle, but powers and principalities.
I'm not a Bible scholar so I'm not going to throw any verses at you or anything. However, this is what comes to mind. I've been a student of Bible prophecy for some time now. For whatever reason, the Lord has allowed me to discern all the Bible prophecy that is unfolding before our very eyes. Nowadays most people don't know about Jesus let alone end time prophecy. I don't know your level of knowledge, but there is something called the apostasy or great falling away of believers. Two things happen before Christ returns and I believe it is a simultaneous occurence. We will see the middle of the road Christians either revive in their faith or we will see them fall away. If you ever believed in Christ, now is the time to strengthen your faith, not fall away from it. The peace you feel may be a false sense of peace. Also in end time prophecy, we see tht the antichrist will also offer the world a false peace tht will last for about 3.5yrs. I tell you this example so tht you see tht false peace is possible. I hope you think about this and pray to God. What if turns out God does exist? Salvation through Jesus is a free gift from God.

Congratulations on joining the world of reality. Religion is based on fear. It's the control mechanism organized religion leaders use to keep them in line, to keep them foolishly donating their money to the church, etc. What is allowing you to finally have peace in your life is knowing that what scares you now is make believe. What used to scare you is make believe too, but you thought the things to fear were real. Isn't it nice to be enlightened?

...well i never became an athiest as far back as i can remember i thought church was a joke when i was forced to go
i thought i had to fake believing in it like santas claus
cause thats what people expected
so i guess when i "came out" as an agnostic i might have felt more confident

who knows
everyone has a differnt experience

Nah, there are still crazy people out there that do horrible things. I'll always be afraid of them. People like Ted Bundy are real, whether or not god is.

Yeah. When I gave my life to Christ I stopped being afraid of scary movies. Ironic.

The answers are only inside. Once you begin to understand that you hold all the answers, the "unknown" is no longer so scary.

no offense, but the point of religion is to make you a better person, not to make you afraid of going to sleep

you should have changed your religion to something that didnt make you feel so guilty all of the time, instead of automatically abandoning your faith in God

imagine of each and every of the people in the back of them that make up the crew and what number circumstances they screw up and function to re-do the scene and that there's a director yelling "decrease!!!" and then they restore the lights and they drop stuff and that all of them chortle. that continually facilitates me.
