Humans waste an incredible amount of energy. I'm thinking of a news show I watched a couple of nights ago. It was about a city that was having a really hot summer and how people were trying to curb energy consumption. One thing that struck me as very odd was the fact that one building thought it was doing a great service by turning off the "decorative" lighting effects. Decorative lighting is a total waste of energy that could be better put to use elsewhere. Imagine the energy we'd save as a society if decorative lighting was banned. Plus all those automatic doors. I know some people do need them, but most people can open a door just fine on their own. Our local shopping center has doors for people in wheelchairs, etc., but you need to push a button for them to work. This uses less energy than automatic doors.
We waste a lot of energy in our own homes too. By leaving things on when not in use (lights, computers, tvs, etc), we are consuming energy. Lots of things can be done throughout the home to help save energy. Set your hot water tank to a lower temperature. Same with the thermostat. Turn off lights, etc., when not in use. Don't leave your car running while waiting for someone. I could list even more ways to waste energy but it would end up being a book.
