The alcohol is causing the damage so no healing can take place unless he stops drinking alcohol. If he is a heavy alcoholic, you might want to consider inpatient rehabiliation.
The problem is that liver damage is caused by the formation of scar tissue. Even if the normal cells heal, the liver will never go back to full function because of the scarring.
The only cure is a liver transplant. Livers are a relatively easy organ to transplant, if a donor is found, but there is no way that a doctor would perform one unless a patient is sober. The patient will also have to take anti-rejection drugs for life.
I wish you luck. You may want to consider seeking help for yourself through Al-Anon, the AA group for families of alcoholics (2nd website). Alcohol can mess relationships up so far that you have to help yourself before you can help your loved one.

If you suspect that you have cirrhosis, and it is distinct possibility if you drink heavily and regularly, you should consult your physician. A physical examination is often sufficient for a diagnosis, though you may have to have blood tests and a liver biopsy, in which a small portion of the liver is removed and examined, to assess the extent of the damage. What ever the underlying cause of the cirrhosis, stop drinking alcohol immediately. If you continue to drink, the disease is certain to get worse. Your liver will remain particularly sensitive to alcohol, and amounts that would have no effect on a healthy person may kill you. He has to stop drinking or the liver will get worse, You can not cure liver damage once it has been done, if the person quits drinking that will help.

For liver failure that is the result of long-term deterioration, the initial treatment goal may be to save whatever part of the liver is still functioning. If this is not possible, then a liver transplant is required. Fortunately, liver transplant is a common procedure that is often successful.
If you have been diagnosed with fatty liver disease, you might be feeling afraid and somewhat bewildered and would appreciate more information about all aspects of this condition. What causes it? What are the treatments available? What are the possible diet and lifestyle changes you should make? What advice for a holistic approach to managing – and even reversing it? and i know the website is so good and full information a bout fatty liver at:http://adola.net/go/fattyliver-bible/

When it comes to regenerating organs, liver is the best at it. Although alcohol damage is significant, liver still can still regain up to 90% of its function. Of course alcohol consumption has to stop. And liver transplant is not the answer. Doctors will not transplant anything unless it's a life threatening condition. And their is no such thing as "easy organ to transplant". There are many complications to every transplant of whatever organ. A lot of alcoholics only have to stop drinking to cure themselves. A psychiatrist may help.
