I'm due to deliver my first child(baby girl) any day now. I have not made the decision however on what her last name will be. I am planning on marrying her father, but we are having difficulties in our relationship right now-due to my parents honestly. I'm afraid that if i give Briana her father's last name and then he and I never wed I will have to raise a baby with a totally different last name than my own. It will be easier to change her name to his when we get married since he will already be on the b/c right? I don't want to hurt him, but it feels smarter to me. Also, what about hyphened names? If I use both of our last names can I just use one of them later if needed? Don't want her going to school and having to write 2 last names...any info on that will be so helpful right now. I am stressing so bad over this; I know I should have had it figured out a long time ago. Thank you!!

I gave my daughter her father's last name and it was the biggest mistake I have ever made. We broke up when she was 2 months old, and now I can't afford to change her name to my last name. I haven't received any child support from him (she is 2 1/2 now) he doesn't see her, she doesn't even know who he is. He is a big druggy now and I really don't want her to have anything to do with him. I hate that she has his last name, I try not to think about it, but when I take her to the doctor or anything like that I wince when I hear that last name. Protect yourself, and your baby, especially if you are having problems already. Give that baby your name and if everything works out and you 2 get married change it to his. Feel free to contact me, I am here to help.

You have to do what feels right in your heart. There is no reason why you can't change her name (and your name if you choose to do so) when you get married. In the end it has to be a decision that you are comfortable with, if it's important to you to have the same last name as your baby, then perhaps your best bet is to give her your last name, until the time that your last name changes (if you decide to do that), or allow her to make that decision once she is old enough to do. Don't get overly stressed out about this because in the end, you can always change her name. Just keep yourself calm and happy, and enjoy the special time you are about to have:)

If you truly love him than you need to give your guy's child his name. It cost ALOT of money to change a child's name and if you two are planning on gettin married anyway I would do it. If that just overwelms you too much then give her both. If you exclude his name from his child that could really hinder your guy's relationship I know it would with me. In this day and time it is not uncommon for mother's to have different names than their children anyway. The percentage rate is pretty high for that senario seriously!!! Plus one day she won't use either she'll get married and have a whole new last name anyway. I would give her, her father's name b/c you're planning on it being yours anyway right? If nothing else give her both but don't exclude him whatever you do. That would really hurt him I'm sure. Good luck!!!

Use his last name. I'm due with a son any day now and I'm going to give him his father's full name. What if the two of you DO get married, then the baby will already have his last name.

I gave my son his father's last name, since we also plan to marry, hopefully next summer.

Hyphenated names are okay, so long as the two last names aren't both really long and they sound decent together. I had a friend who'se last name was Montag Neise (with no hyphen, she was quite adamant). Her parents were married, just her mom didn't wanna change her name and they both wanted the kids to have their last name.

I actually see more and more kids with hypen last names and they are not from unwed mothers, so that might be a nice idea until you might decide to use just the father's last name. No need to stress you will have enough real stress with a baby on your hands. The hypen is a nice idea, even to keep for good.

Good Luck with everything :-)

If unwed, stick to your last name. Things change all the time, and because as you said; your parents are causing some difficulties, you may never marry him. And most states do have laws about using last names other than yours or the husband. You might want to check into that for your state.

I think you should give your baby daughter both of your last names, and think of the cost you'll be saving later after marriage (changing her name)...also you might want to ask the father about this as its his child too. Good Luck and early Congratulations on the birth of your newborn daughter!

hyphernate but put yours first so if you want you can just drop the last name if you wish but he is the father so the child should also have his name as he is a part of your lives for at least the next 18 years

Give the baby your last name. If you do marry her father, it will be a matter of a simple form and about 50$ to change it. If you give her the father's last name, don't get married and want to change it.. it could take a lawyer and thousands of dollars to get it changed.. think about what you want.

If you want her to have her father's last name no matter what.. then give it to her. If you're unsure.. do what I mentioned, and it will save time, money and grief later on.
