It's an awsome car, as of what I heard.
Although I do not own this car, I have seen many people's positive reviews about this (and some negative views as well.)
The consumers say this is the bang for the buck. Low price and good quality.
The bottom line is, the Yaris is based on the Echo, which is the older brother of the Yaris. You will find many similarities between them. In fact, some say the Yaris is the old Echo with some plastic surgery, because few consumers complained about the Echo's boxy appearance.
About the Yaris -
The positivities are;
- great gas mileage
- more handsome design than the Echo, which is its older brother
- very affordable price while still carrying out Toyota's top reliability
- the car is "tall", which means unlike the other small cars like Chevy Cavalier or Hyundai Accent, the Yaris' seats actually boost the passingers up so they can have a better view of the road (well... this is the property of the Echo, and I guess this will still be passed onto Yaris... although I personally did not check it...)
- less engine noise (compared to Dodge Neon)
- pretty good ride (smooth suspension for its class, some people say)
- soft, if not powerful, accelleration
- slightly improved interior design than the Echo
- pretty roomy for its class
etc., etc.
Negativities;
- interiors are still far from the luxurious
- the speedometer, odometer, etc. are still located at the center of the dashboard. This is same as the Echo.
- the CD player and the other interiors are not the standard package when purchasing the car (?) This was for the Echo, and honestly I am not sure if this is still an inssue with the Yaris.
- some more.
There are many things I can list, and you can find some good information on the MSN auto. http://autos.msn.com There are plenty of reviews and statistics, and pictures, expert reviews, etc. It's an awsome site.

I had a Yaris as a rental recently. I've had rental cars before and each car has a "getting used to the layout" feel for a while. But --
What I did notice:
- drivers seat is really uncomfortable - blech.
- the foot pedals were the wierdest! Perhaps it was just me...perhaps not. It felt like the pedals we just off to the right. So the gas pedal was quite close to the wall/centre console of. So much so that I either rubbed my foot against it, or it would slip off the left side because I compensated too much. Maybe it is a really narrow pedal? Everytime I would hit the brakes, I would be between the pedals. Scary!
- the centre dash was just irritating. I couldn't easily tell what speed I was going, or see the turn signal indicators. The instruments are just a little too far to be within my periferal, so it would force taking your eyes off the road. Just bad design.
- the "blind spot" is a "blind area" because of the shape of the back quarter.
- I didn't notice anything notworthy in the mileage.
- the car is not very big at all. Anyone sitting in the back will have to be less than 4 feet tall. Perferrably without legs or feet.
I can't see this car being worth much value after 4-5 years. Who would want to buy an ugly car with strange features? I have no doubt that if you buy it cheap now, you will be keeping it forever.
There are other small cars (not compact) which would be better comfort, value, much more practical and safe. You would likely recover any additional dollars spent now, in a resale value in later years. Buying a car is hard - best of luck to you.

The Toyota Yaris is a good car for the price. However the base model Yaris(coupe and sedan) doesn't include power windows/locks, no floor mats, and no radio/stereos. So it's just a low priced car with good gas milage, but you have to do everything manually.
If you're planning to add in options for the car that includes all these aspects then i suggust you buy the Toyota Corolla. The Yaris is only a reasonable car without the options if you add in the options then the price usually comes out to the same as the Corolla.

I have been driving a Yaris hatchback for 3-1/2 months now. I love it. Far from ugly, it's quite cute looking, imo, and I get lots of comments and questions about it from people who are very complimentary of the looks. (I have to admit the sedan is rather boring looking to me.) I can only say I'm really happy with this car - it's a great about town car, gets great mileage, and the person who said the back seat is tiny is dead wrong. Every single adult that has ridden in the back of mine has been amazed at how much space they have. It's quite unexpected, because the car looks and is so small on the outside. Also, it's really easy to park in tight spaces, a big plus in congested San Francisco.

I am a self sufficient medical school student that is poor and is basically having to pay his way through everything. Its just my girlfreind and me and we are struggling to make something of ourselves. For those of us that do not have the luxury (believe me...its a luxury) to have someone else taking care of us financialy, this is a great car. If you can let go of your vanity for a second ( I know its not the most sexiest car ), you will see that this car is loaded with smart economical advantages.
-A timing chain, instead of a timing belt, saving you hundreds/thousands of dollars in maintenance and possible reapairs.
-An engine that requires oil change @ 4000-5000 miles.
-Highly gas efficiency, and if you get light weight rims, the gas mileage jumps to 42-45 mpg.
- For you speed freaks on a budget, the yaris beat out the new honda, chevy, nissan, and suzuki hatchbacks on 0-60 run.
-The toyota yaris in the US is sold with a direct plug-in mp3 player port, and 15 inch tires standard, and fully loaded is only a couple of hundred more.
-The oustanding quality and reliablity of toyota.
For those of you working hard and paying your way to a greater future....this is definently worth a look.

in the hatchback or sedan?
i drove the toyota echo as a rental car for a couple of days (i guess the yaris is the echo with a new name and design) and found it to be woefully underpowered. i don't need something that goes from 0 to 60 in under 10 seconds, but if i step on the gas, i like to feel something.
maybe they have resolved that issue by now, but i would definitely give it a test drive before you buy.
