Well, on another forum, we discussed the same topic. What we came up with was that every time somebody registers a horse, they pay a small fee that goes toward shelters that have these "slaughter" horses to feed them and take care of them until somebody adopts them... the only problem is finding an association that will charge the fee, and finding people that will house these horses until they can be adopted.

convince the people breeding then not training unregistered horses (who make up most of the kill pens) to not produce foals. Killer buyers look for the 5-8 year old 'green broke' or unbroke - chances are they have not received any drugs or much of anything period. Horses that come in loose - because they aren't broke to lead - catch their eye.

buy the registered horses and train them for second chances

And it's true that horsemeat is leaner and better than some we consume. It wasn't *that* long ago you could buy horse at the meat counter. And USDA websites still offer nutritional information about it.

Write your congressmen.

The vast majority of horse killed in America are shipped to forien countries. I think if the French want to eat horses, they can kill their own, not mine.

And you can support horse rescues. Adopt a horse that would have gone to slaughter.

Put up enough money to buy and keep horses, so that when their owners are no longer able to keep them, your organization can buy them, and care for them until they die.

Please don't suggest some law or intervention to make people behave. It simply doesn't work.
