Here's the situation. My Father had his plates taken from him (Two DWI in a 6 year span) and he's moving out of the country. My girlfriend wants to buy his car (nice Acura RL), but I am on the same insurance as her.

We live in KS and my father is in MN. Can I get in trouble because my GF wants the car and buying it when I am his son?

I don't drink, so I have no clue about the laws. I want to make sure I won't get in trouble or both of them before I let him sell to her.

She wants the car really badly, but not worth it if they both will send me to jail doing it.

Thanks!

Well, when my younger brother tried buying it in MN, they said the car can't be sold to a family member.

Then my friend scared me by saying if my GF buys it, it is considered a SCAM and FRAUD because she's buying it and they can assume he will drive it again.

I can't answer my own question, so I am adding here.

When you buy the car from him, it will be registered under your name now, not your father's. I would assume that you would get new plates also. How exactly would you get in trouble?

You are breaking no laws. Buy the car and enjoy it. The law has only revoked your fathers ability to drive. The car is his personal property. He can sell it to you if he wishes.

Don't see any problem with this. If you are really bothered by this call your MV dept. and ask them. They will give info. You are just buying the car the DWI had nothing to do with you.

So what? Just because they had 2 DWI's doesn't mean the car is crap....they are probably selling it because they lost their license and can't drive anymore.....

No. Just get the car registered in your name. There would be no way they could associate it with your father.
