Because of the additives that are given to a horse to perform, whether it be racing, recreational, etc., the chemicals that aid in the performance of a horse can be deadly to humans
When an animal is slaughtered, the additives/chemicals remain in the horse and are ingested as the meat is ingested. You cannot 'cook out' the chemicals or any medications through grilling, broiling and any other means of food preparation.
There are slaughter houses (two in Texas) within the U.S. in which the horse is slaughtered but the meat is not allowed to be sold in the United States. However, the horse meat is shipped to other parts of the world for human consumption.
It is dumb and stupid to be eating horse meat. Ask any equine veterinarian about the potency and amounts of medications/additives afforded a horse to perform. Everything from phenobutozolen (Bute) to seasonal preventative vaccinations to medicines, can produce an ill effect and within time could be fatal for human beings to consume.
In plain English. for your own good...
DO NOT EAT HORSE MEAT.

above points about what's in the meat are true - but that's not all that makes the killer pens.
No I don't believe slaughter should be outlawed. There have been no satisfactory answers to what to do with the 50,000+ said to be going to slaughter....a VERY small part of the horse population but enough that rescues *can not* take them. And horses that are produced and not trained are not good for riding or pets. And *if* those 50,000+ are euthanized and buried there is NO answer about what that does to groundwater supplies...this is putting lethal doses of deadly chemicals into the land and into the water supplies.
Slaughter is not a pleasant thing. There are so many people producing foals with no long term plan and no real consideration of what goes into it. They think they can make money and even when shown that isn't usually possible do it anyway...then the horses end up needing homes and because they're mutts with no jobs and no suitability for anything (because there was no plan other than the horse up the road is available) then something needs to be done with them. Every person who votes no can cough up $$$$ to purchase land, feed, housing, vet care and the purchase price needed to deal with it.

I think until we can work out a way to control the numbers of horses being produced yearly, and hold people more accountable for their actions, slaughter is a sad, but necessary part of the horse industry. How many of the thousands of race horses and backyard bred horses that are rejected for various reasons are you going to pay for to keep them alive and healthy? It's the same thing here as irresponsible dog and cat breeders. We are causing an overpopulation problem and then solving it at the cost of perfectly good lives.
Sad, but until the government and the public take a stand on breeding regulations and how they should be legally enforced, this stuff is going to keep happening. Personally, I believe that any animal that is not going to be used for breeding purposes (and if they are, they need a good reason and further regulations) should be sterilised before sold on to a new owner. And if not- huge fines etc, etc. People need to be forced to do the right thing nowadays.

YES
I think that if the French and Japanese want to eat horse meat, they can kill their own horses.
People seem to think the problem stems from the "back yard breeder." This is a shaky argument at best. Between 40,000 and 55,000 horses are stolen each year and sold at auction houses for a quick profit. An uncofortably large portion of stolen horses end up in the slaughter house. The Premarin industry produces tens of thousands of foals each year. Most of these end up in the slaughter house. Most people breeding in their "back yards" are actually producing quality horses that they couldn't otherwise afford.
Horses going to slaughter aren't the old and sick ones either (do you think they are ALLOWED to sell meat from sick animals?)

I agree with Jan H on this issue. I believe that the problem stems with the backyard breeder. People think since they have a stud, they can breed horses and make money. That's not the case.
This is an educational issue and should be dealt with as such.
What is going to happen to all of the unwanted horses out there? Which is worse, slaughter or neglect? I don't like to see either. So there needs to be more responsible breeders/owners out there.

The funding became only removed from the business funds this 12 months, even if the bill to restrict horse slaughter and horse slaughter transportation is stuck in committee at present. The secure Act S541/HR1094 has lots of help from Congress, even if the 5 committee chairs are sitting on it. even if, horse meat is prohibited for human intake interior the U. S. because it truly is riddled with drugs ate up via our horses. Horses interior the U. S. were declared to be better half animals in 1970 via the FDA, which ability they are waiting to eat drugs for convenience a lifeless ringer for different better half animals and they are not cattle.
