getting rid of fleas is a THREE STEP process.
1. SPRAY YARD
2. SPRAY HOUSE
3. FLEA DIP ANIMALS, AND GET FLEA PREVENTION FROM VET!
pest control places have sprays that are pet/child safe. call around and ask. most places also have discount package deals for ppl that spray regularly. about 80-100 dollars a YEAR vs. 300 dollars or more for a one time visit.
spraying is the only thing that REALLY works when your home is infested. the "bombs" you get at the store only kill off SOME of the eggs, not all. and it only takes a few eggs to re-infest your home. the professional stuff works better *that's why it costs more*
getting your yard sprayed is VERY important. your pets bring in fleas from the yard. and it only takes a pair...to make a billion!
keep your grass cut down, and debris away from places your children and animals play. that helps cut down on the numbers as well. if you yard look inviting...fleas will come and lay eggs.
NEVER leave standing water out for longer than 8hrs. *even dog dishes* always change out the water. this gives fleas (and tick and mosquitos) a perfect access to water and places for mosquitoes to lay eggs.
getting your animals dipped will kill off most of the adult fleas and eggs. a once a month flea prevention you can get from you vet will prevent any future fleas from laying eggs..and kills them off.
the prevention is a liquid that you apply between the shoulder blades of your animal. it can be expensive...but in the long run...MUCH cheaper than the infestation of fleas.
once they are under control you can use the over the counter cheap brand of prevention you can find at any discount store (this is what i use...i don't have fleas in my house..nor do my dogs have any on them..and i live on 5acres). you of course must spray regularly to keep the number of fleas down to a harmless minimum.
well that's about it.
unless of course you have carpet. i hate carpet...its PERFECT for flea eggs.
we removed ALL our carpets. much cleaner now, and you wouldn't believe what the vaccum leaves behind under that carpet you THINK is clean. ewwww!
and by the way...fleas don't just bite animals...if the animals are protected with prevention (like the other posters have suggested) they can and will start biting humans. like your children!
fleas carry diseases! i'd SPRAY and not leave it up to just the prevention.
Good luck

When fleas are in the larval stage, most pesticides (sprays or bombs) wont kill them, that is why a couple weeks later you have fleas again even tho you treated your home and pet. The key thing to remember is whatever products you use to treat your house ,REPEAT the treatment about once a week for at least three weeks. That way the newly hatched eggs AND the larva that have emerged into adulthood are taken care of. Dont bother with flea dips or sprays, use the spot ons (Frontline, Advantage etc) that you get from vetinarians. They are much safer for kids than sprays or dips and alot more affective. The also last alot longer. I've heard people say you can catch fleas by sitting a bowl of water under a wall nightlight. The fleas are drawn to the light, but if you have a bad infestation this isnt going to help you much. Good luck!

They make stuff you can sprinkle on the carpet, but I found the best way to get rid of them is to use it and vaccumm the floor 3-4 times a day till they are gone. It is alot of work and really sucks to vaccumm that many times a day but it will suck up the fleas and keep them from laying eggs. Thats how I did it.

I buy the flea killer plus fogger made by Raid and it really worked good for me. It kills fleas plus hatching eggs for up to 4 months. The instructions are on the box. I am sure this is safe for children as my grandchildren are visiting me all the time! LOL

Advantage from the vet for the animal. it will kill all the fleas on the animal within 2 days and your house will be clean shortly after that. i ve used it several times and never had to treat my house. the fleas die off when they cant land on the animal anymore

Vacuum your house then bath your pet and treat them with revolution or frontline, I know people who have used this on their children as headlice preventative and it hasn't harmed them. I know revolution on your pet treats fleas in it's environment as well so it is the simplest treatment.
