The carbs in soda come from simple sugars, which are broken down much more quickly by the body than the complex starches found in breads & such, which are broken down much more slowly. The simple sugars provide a burst of energy and then are gone. But the complex starches (complex carbs) stay around longer, so they provide energy for longer.

Most of the carbs in soda come from sucrose. This tends, in most persons, to give a rapid rise in blood sugar followed by a sharp decline. Breads contain starch which releases its sugars more slowly. Eat whole grain breads with a small amount of natural peanut butter or healthy margerine which slows the digestion down. I also recommend fruit juices over sodas for energy purposes.

Soda has more sugar so it burns calories faster which makes you feel a bit more energetic. Also, if you are talking about Coke or Pepsi or Mountain Dew (and I'm sure others) have caffeine in them as well as too much sugar.

Bread breaks down the sugars more slowly than soda.
