As long as the casing isn't bent, you can turn it and try to get the firing pin to strike at in a different place.

Rimfire has primer all the way around the rim, so if it doesnt go band you can(will not hurt you) try again(helps to rotate cartridge), ussually goes bang second time. This is not unsafe. Most of my rimfire shooting is done with a semi-auto pistol, and if it doesnt fire i pull open slide and round flies 20 feet and is not worth looking for. the only thing you should do is wait a few seconds before opening the chamber on a "dud", there has been times when rounds have been ejected from a gun then go off.

Wait a couple of seconds keeping your gun pointed in a safe direction. Then remove the cartridge to make sure it wasn't a 'squib' load (not likely w/a rimfire, but make sure). That is, make sure the bullet itself isn't lodged in the barrel. The casing will be empty. If it is, don't try to fire your gun again until you've removed the stuck bullet from the barrel.

After all this, if you still wish to rotate the bullet and try it again, go ahead. However rimfire ammo is so cheap, I would just throw the bullet away and use a new one.

Weigh the risk of possible injury v/s trying to save a 4 cent bullet. 22 rimfire ammo is dirt cheap(bricks of 500 for 9.99)Hospital visits to remove a bullet from your (insert appendage here) are expensive.

For safety sake, you should wait 20 seconds with the barrel pointed in a safe direction...Then eject the round, in a safe spot...

There isn't one round of ammo that is worth even a scratch, why take the chance..
