For me, it is an ego thing. The models and actors they put on the cover of Men's Health magazine may be better looking then me, but I am bigger than most of them.
Crap! they put "The Rock" on the cover of the September '06 issue!
Well, time to workout more!

I like using measurable benchmarks. Examples - I can climb x number of stairs without losing my breath now, I can walk a mile a minute faster, my clothes are looser now, etc. I set goals and work towards them. Rewards I've used for reaching goals - new exercise clothes, pedicures, new clothes (for reaching a smaller size)
The trick is to plan for slow improvement. If you go too fast or expect too much, you may injure yourself or burn out from the effort.
A good way to start is with a simple pedometer. See how much activity you actually get in during an average week. It may shock you (one way or the other). If you don't get at least 10,000 steps in, try raising your average 500-1000 steps a week until you get there.

not to sound like a prick or anything, but i've always been skinny, so i don't work out to lose weight. i've started working out to get back into shape, though, in the aspect of endurance and cardio. for me, the thing that helped motivate me a lot was finding an activity that will increase my endurance and cardio, that i enjoy. for me, that's rock-climbing. you have to try different types of exercise, and find the one that doesn't seem like a chore to do, and stick with it. the climbing gym i go to is about an hour away from where i live, but i still go as often as i can, because it's something i really enjoy.

I want good health and I don't want to be a fat slob. I'd also like to have a lot of impressive muscle to show off to people, but those days are gone. At my age, I'm 63, big muscles take second place to a healthy heart and low bodyfat.

Knowing that I'm getting good old oxygen flowing all over my body and to all my organs, which regenerates them and makes my whole body function better, and knowing I'm helping the toxins out of my system, which means I am building up my immune system.
Plus if I have some decent tunes in my iPod, I'm all the more motivated. :)
