You and your parents/guardians have to decide on how old you should be to date. You also have to decide on what exactly a date is. Are you old enough to drive and have your own money for the movies or would your parents have to drive you and your date and pay for your movie ticket? Maturity is only a small part of dating. Do your parents/guardians know this person? It might help to have the person you want to date be invited for dinner or lunch so he/she could meet the family The more the parental units know about the person, the more comfortable they will be in agreeing on an age to date.

I can remember wanting to break the rules and date a slightly older guy when I was only 15. My father would not relent. I didn't get asked out again until I was 17. My father was wise. The guy I had wanted to go out with really started veering from his nice guy image and became a druggie. He wasn't interested in me, he was interested in my gullibility.

From 14-17 each year seems significant in terms of growing up and seeing what your peers are doing. You don't just grow up from one year to the next and "arrive." Your eyes continue to open and you become more self assured so you can make your own choices.

16 - because if you get in a bad place, you have a driver's license and can drive home. Also, you have more maturity and should be able to spot a problem earlier than a 14 year old would.
