Sorry, I was in the colorguard. Partly because it was easier to remember moves than it was to memorize music! I would just tell you to practice and practice. Try one line at a time. When you get one memorized, try and add another one to it. You'll get it!

Actually you'll find that the marching helps you remember the music and vice versa. Let the two mold together in your mind. When you practice the music, picture yourself marching the drill. Practice the drill (or visualize it) and sing or hum the song as you do it. If you can get a recording of the band playing the music, play and march (or visualize) along with it. You'll have it all down sooner than you think.

I remember having to memorize all my songs. You get to use flip folders in college (sometimes). I memorized my songs measure by measure. Memorize one, then two, then three, and keep building on that. You should have sectionals or something during band camp. Just keep practicing and playing the songs over and over, and you'll get it! It also helps a lot to write the counts & moves on your music. That way, you know what measure you're on and where you are in the music and how that corresponds to where your moves are and how long the counts are. Good luck! Have fun with the competitions (if your school does that)!

Don't try to fully memorize your music until you have the drill to go with it. Know it well enough, but you want to have it totally memorized when you know what you'll be doing, marching-wise, at the same time. It's easier to remember it all lumped together. You'll get to where you can close your eyes and visually everything you do in the show.

I'm in marching band too. And I have to learn 5 songs too. It'll get easier as the season goes on, trust me. You sound kind of new so don't worry. IT DOES GET EASIER! All you can do is practice and listen to what the staff and your section leader have to say and you'll be fine.
