How do guys like to be told that a girl likes them? Do they liked to be told straight or just flirted with?

I like this guy and I need to tell him I like him... I am just not sure what the best way to do that is. Should I let him know flat out or kind of hint him? And if I should hint him I need to know what to say! I am so bad at this. I have been his friend for a while and we have great conversations on AIM. Please help me as much as you possibly can! Thanks
