I would like to write a book about a field I used to work in but feel insecure since I no longer have the job. Its a specialist area and another job may not come up.

Why wouldn't it be? You still have the knowledge, don't you? What you don't know you can research. People do this all the time.

Provided you know a lot about it, and provided it has not moved on since you stopped working in it yes!
These days, in some fields, if you take a coffee break, the job has changed so much by the time you get back, you need a refresher course!

Sure, why not? What is the job field? It's not easy getting published, you may want to check out Dan Poynter (in Santa Barbara, he has a website parapublishing). Depending on the field, you may have a niche and find people would want to publish it.

You can write about anything you wish, discerning readers will either accept it or not...I agree with the one who said publishing is a whole other story. If there is a need for your knowledge you should definitely share it with the world.

If you feel that you have something worthwhile to say then write the book.

Whether anybody will read it or not is another matter.
