Enter the intersection and stop about 1/2 way through. That way when a opening appears you are setting on dead ready. Also you may not enter the intersection when the light is red so if nothing else you get through on that cycle plus you don't have some pissed off guy behind you.

In all 50 US states it is illegal to enter an intersection UNLESS you can completely clear that intersection. It is rarely enforced but that is the law. Also if emergency vehicles have to run the lght you aren't blocking the intersection.
My advice is to not block the intersection. The 5-10 feet won't make ay difference in your travels.

Think in drivers ed that tell you to stay clear of pedestrian line, so if taking drivers test would do that. In real life most make their presents known by sticking out some. How much will get determined by how busy intersection appears. Should you live in NY heard stories of people losing headlights blocking pedestrians. Felt like nkocking out some.

I go to the center of the intersection, this allows the driver behind me to make his turn also when the light changes.

where I live, if you don't pull out, you'll be sitting there (behind the line) all day, as there ARE no openings until the light changes.

You move ahead. Or at least you BETTER be moving ahead. Don't screw the people behind you.
