Yeah, Consumer Reports has a prescription medicine guide.

Consumer Reports also published its own diet book --written by my own gastroenterologist. There aren't any good diet pills! There were two on the market a couple of years ago and they both got yanked for horrible side effects. Tell your mom to stay away from them.

Not sure about web sites but the best way to learn about diet medications is to buy a nursing drug book. Its pretty easy to understand, check the glossery. Some prescription diet pills: Meridia, fastin, redux, fen-phen and pondamin. Do not trust over the counter diet pills. They have not been approved by the FDA and can be very, very dangerous. You are right with your dad. Eat less and move more.

I don't know any sites, but as a guy who lost about 20lb with exercise, healthy diet and a little help of diet pills. Here's my take.

Diet pills work mainly in two ways. 1) Speed up your metabolism with stimuli, such as caffeine. 2) control your appetite.

Either way, it is not good for your health. It is like giving Nitro to boost your engine. It might work in short time period, but not long run. I don't especially recommend for elder people to use them.
It affect blood pressure, and might damage Liver.

There are less harmful diet pills out there, but bottom line is the pills push your body to burn more calories or suppress healthy appetite by putting harmful foreign substance in you system.

There were college kids who died by OD diet pills. (He ODed and chased by Red Bull. Go figure..)

Stop your Mom from taking them! Eat healthy and do some exercise!
Nothing beats it!

The healthier way to lose weight is simply to eat right and live an active lifestyle. All pills do is make you really hyper so you're all go go go and you don't feel the need to eat for energy. Which decreases your intake of calories, yes, but also your intake of important vitamins and minerals your body needs. So if she was to take them she'll need to be careful to make sure she's getting healthy foods to sustain herself and not just getting empty calories
