Weather hasn't been a problem here in L.A. for the past few Xmas. Last Christmas my kids were swimming in our pool.
Disneyland is all decked out for the holidays. Since it is Christmas break for the schools in California, almost all of the rides are running.
The most convenient (and expensive) hotels are the Disneyland Hotel and the Disney hotel connected to California Adventure Park.

As some of the previous answers reflect, December can be the best of times or the worst of times. Here are my thoughts:
Weather can vary greatly. Last year, my daughter has her picture with Santa at Disneyland wearing shorts and a short sleeve shirt. However, the next week it was long sleeves and pants. So if you do decide to come, pack for dressing in layers, just like the Santas do. (The Santa at Disneyland is very traditional in the big red suit, but at California Adventure he is in shorts!)
The week before Christmas will most likely be more crowded because of vacations for some schools, but not nearly as crowded as between Christmas and New Year's Day. It will also be cooler than summertime, so even if the lines are longer, it isn't as miserable. If you could go the week of the 10th, you would be less likely to have crowds. Or if you can go after the 1st of January.
Some of the rides are closing now for the maintenance, but they try to have all of it finished by Thanksgiving since that is the busiest day of the year. If things aren't reopened by then, they will most likely be closed for quite a major rehaul.
The park does have shorter hours in the off-season, but usually you can see everything you want because of the lack of crowds. This is a great time to travel with smaller children since they have a shorter time frame for standing in lines, etc.
If part of what you are planning on involves lots of fun in the pool, be sure to ask your hotel if they heat their pool. Not all pools are, and even if the temps are warm, the pool may still be a bit chilly. (Not that kids usually seem to care!)
Christmas time is a wonderful time to visit Disneyland. The decorations are beautiful, especially as it gets dark. There is a wonderful feeling in the resort, and if you can swing it, do come for a visit!

RE:
Is Disneyland (California) any good in December?
We're considering going during the week before Christmas because it's quite a bit cheaper but I'm concerned about the weather and I wonder if rides will be down for maintenance.
Does anyone have any experience with Disneyland during December and if so what kind of clothing is...

Sure do. It's kind of a toss up. It's worth going if you love to see pretty decorations and enjoy the Christmas shows they have. However, Christmas time is one of the most crowded times of the year... sometimes beating out summer as a whole. So you'll have to decide if the huge crowds are worth it to you. If it still sounds fun to you, avoid weekends and aim for a mid-week visit. Get there super early--just as the park is opening.
As for clothing... I recommend jeans and a T-shirt. Bring a sweatshirt or jacket because once the sun goes down it will be chilly. You can rent a locker and store it in there if you don't want to carry it all day, or just hang onto it- your choice.
One cool thing about Disneyland in Decmeber is The Haunted Mansion Attraction. It is altered to look like Tim Burton's Nightmare Before Christmas. It is AMAZING! Also, on main street, after the fireworks, they fill main street with "snow" and play Christmas music. Obviously, it isn't real... its a foam substance, but it is so cool to see and is a lot of fun.
If you wish to avoid the crowds, opt to go anywhere between Septebmer and mid November. Crowds will be practically non-existent, but you'll still want to avoid weekends. Crowds pick back up for Saturdays and Sundays.
The Grand California is my favorite Disneyland Resort. But it is also the most expensive. The classic Disneyland Resort is the cheapest, but is also very nice.

I wouldn't worry about rides being down. There's always one or two down for repairs, but not more at any particular time of year.
It will likely be CROWDED. It's a popular time of year. (and decorated for Xmas - very fun!)
Rain could be a problem, but if you aren't afraid of a little water, bring a poncho (the cheap plastic one-size-fits-all kind are perfect for keeping everything dry) and enjoy the fact that most of the people who had planned to go will likely wimp out (although they may close if it's raining hard enough - check that out first).
December weather isn't great by California standards, but if you're from someplace that really gets cold, you'll be getting a nice break.
HAVE FUN!!

It might be really crowed but try to catch it in January, when the decorations are still up and the parade and fireworks because you wouldn't want to miss that.
If you change you mind about DisneyLand try DisneyWorld.
