The word 'develop' means itself, to bring into being gradually.
If a screen cracked due to being hit by something, no, it has not developed a fault, unless it can be proved that the screen had an existing crack that was caused to develop further.
If something is instantly broken, the word develop cannot be used to refer to the second that it took to break it. The word develop is assumed to mean that it happened gradually, over time and was not a surprise.
Yes, a crack that develops in a rock over time, and is developing (over time) a larger crack.
If a lens is broken because it was dropped or scratched, it cannot be said that it developed a fault. Unless the fault was visible and acknowledged before it fell and broke.

North Americans may use up a lot of resources, however, most of the population of the world is elsewhere. And, even though third world countries aren't doing well, I can tell you they'll be a lot worse off when we all fall down. Where will all the poverty, starved ridden people go? It's the end. I only hope our planet will survive us. When I see photos of earth from space I want to cry. It is the most beautiful creation I've ever seen. Why can't everyone recognize she's a living, breathing organism? We treat our pets better than our home. We could become a sustainable society in Canada, but how about all the other countries? Does sustainability mean we won't have the ability to share our resources or services if they need help? And why should we if they refuse to change as well? Canada would indeed have to harden it's heart considerably.

It is more correct to say the object is broken. When something developes a fault, there is usually a crack in it but the object remains whole. For example, during the earthquake, the ground can develop a fault.

In a word no ! Something that develops a fault, is normally something that has gone wrong and you don't necessarily know what has caused it - the expression 'developed a fault' is more about the mystery than the fault itself !

toota956 has given you a good answer to your question. The term ´develop a fault´refers to something that has taken a period of time to go wrong - it is not used for something that goes wrong instantly or gets broken (as that also tends to be instantaneous)

when you break something then it's broken but in a system there are many components of which are slowly developing faults and finally coming to a grinding halt.

To "develop a fault" means that over time something is happening that will eventually make it fail - such as strain in metal - fatigue.
