Just came across this story about a painting by Patsy Ramsey that nearly matches a painting by another artist:

What are your opinions about this? Do you think it is wrong (plagiarism, copyright infringement, etc.), or do you agree with the artist who painted the original painting (that Patsy Ramsey used the original painting as a "guide" and that it was ok with her)?

Please read the article at the above link before responding.

I don't think it's wrong to use another painting as inspiration. I do believe that Ramsey likely saw this painting, liked it and in an attempt to hone her own skills used it as inspiration to practice her art. I know I've copied paintings myself in an attempt to learn a style. It's a great compliment to the original artist that an amature artist liked the painting enough to copy it. Imitation is the highest form of flattery right?? I think it's ok.

I live in Denver so I hear a lot about the Ramsey's and I read this story awhile back.

I'm sure many artists over the years have painted similar subject matter. A young boy and girl on the beach has probably been done hundreds of times. I think the Denver Post is simply trying to squeeze out one last Ramsey scandal.

As to the two paintings, the one done by Betty Hamilton shows us the work of an accomplished artist with highly developed skills. Patsy Ramsey's painting shows that her skill level is not nearly as developed by comparison.

I agree that we should let poor Mrs. Ramsey rest in peace. The poor woman has been a major suspect for years in a crime she didn't commit. Let her be.

I agree with the artist that she used the painting as a guide....it was a source of inspiration for her. My heart goes out to Patsy Ramsey.

If she signed her own name to it, and not some other name, then there is nothing wrong here. An art name and a pen name are synonymous. It's OK with me, too. I like that painting. It says it to me.

when taking classes in oil paintings- you sometimes use other pictures to inspire you as you learn techniques- let the lady rest!
