I have a very sweet black Lab. She is happy and affectionate, but if I pet her on her head or shoulders for more than a few seconds she walks away, despite the fact that she seems to enjoy it. Why does she do that?

She may be senstive in that area and while enjoys the attention the overall sensation irritates her. A neighbor had a cat that was hyer senstive to touch and hated anyone petting her more then twice in a row on her back.

Another explanation may be she feels rewarded with your stroke and feels secure enough to move on to other interests.

She probably isn't ready to get all relaxed and mellow. Maybe she would rather go for a walk or play.

You've stumped me.
Probably personal preference. She doesn't want to queer the poof, so she takes a little and scrams.
