We don't call our taxis like in most cities, we just have to walk outside and see if their light is on on top and wave them down by putting your arm in the air. There are so many all over the streets, you don't have to worry about finding one generally, and if you're having a hard time, make sure you get to one of the avenues where there are always taxis driving around.

Stephanie S is correct. In Manhattan, people primarily flag down yellow cabs.

To add:
In uptown Manhattan and the outer boroughs (Queens, Brooklyn, Bronx, Staten Island) people rely on Car Services which generally must be called.

The best way to know the car services in your area (if in an outer borough) is to ask someone in the neighborhood (ask in a local deli/grocery store) or check the yellow pages.
