The Polo Grounds in New York City. Hot dogs were sold from hot water tanks as vendors shouted, "Get your Dachshund sausages while they're red hot!" Sports Cartoonist Tad Dorgan sketched a cartoon of barking dachshund sausages nestled in warm buns. Unsure of how to spell dachshund, he simply wrote "Hot Dog". The cartoon was a sensation and the term "hot dog" was born.

The term "hot dog" is credited to sports cartoonist Tad Dorgan. At a 1901 baseball game at the Polo Grounds in New York, vendors began selling hot dachsund sausages in rolls.From the press box, Dorgan could hear the vendors yelling, "Get your dachshund sausages while they're red hot!" He sketched a cartoon depicting the scene but wasn't sure how to spell "dachshund" so he called them simply, "hot dogs." And the rest is history.

The first hot dog was made from a liter of dashound puppies that the owner didn't want. They heated them up on an open fire and put them on buns with mustard and onions and tried them. The first guy said, "Hey, these are pretty good "Hot Dogs". and everyone else said, "Yeah, Hot Dogs, that's what we'll call them". And, like they say...the rest is history.

From what I have heard it origionally came from an old cartoon. It featured hot dogs. In the cartoon they usually said things like "Bow Wow", or "Woof". I guess it was a pretty popular cartoon and it caught on.
