I just paid off my entire credit card yesterday. Tomorrow I am returning some clothes that I bought on my credit card last week.
So- where does the money go? Will my credit card have a negative balance??
This is such a stupid question but it's my first credit card!!

Dear Vanessa:

Your credit card will have a negative balance. If you plan on using the card, then just leave it alone, it'll be less you have to pay next month! If you don't plan on using the card anytime soon, then call the credit card company and request a check.

Good Luck!

Not a stupid question at all - and there's not one answer that fits all situations.

When you return items, the store might just give you cash, but since you purchased on a credit card, they'll almost always just credit your card back.

On the next statement, you'll see the credit. If you make purchases during that same period, the credited amount will be applied toward those purchases. If you have some of your credit left over, depending on the card company policy they might just let it ride until you buy enough to wipe it out. If it's a large amount, particularly if it stays a credit balance for a couple months, they might send you a check.

Good job paying off your card! Try to pay it off each month if you can - that way you won't be paying the ridiculous interest rates that credit cards charge.

The credit card company will have paid the seller and you paid the credit card company.
Thus when you return the clothes which you bought, you'll get paid back in cash by the seller.
Don't you worry friend, there's no way you lose money.

Be Well

It's not a stupid question. 1st the place you are returning the clothes to might offer cash back instead of charging back to your credit card. Credit card companies usually have a limit as to how much negitive balance you have on your card. They might automatically send you a check.

Hello,
Dont worry, the place where you returned your clothes will credit money into your credit card account. It is like you said, a -ve balance. So that money is yours to spend again. :)

However I know of places where they have a policy that if the amount is less than 300, then they pay you cash and if it more than 300 they will send you a cheque in your name to your address. So it depends on the store policy.

Yes, you will have a credit balance on your credit card. It's not a stupid question. They probably won't give you cash but you can ask or ask for a store credit / exchange.

They should credit your card back. So take your credit card back up with you, they should have to swipe it again to credit your account. Also depending on the amount they might give you cash

First of all congrats on paying off your card! You will have a credit on your next statement, try to only purchase something within that same amount to avoid interest on your next purchase, then keep it paid off! ;o)

This money that you get back from the return will be "credited" to your account. It will reflect on your next statement.

They will credit your card and you will have a negative balance. So when you make your next purchase it will take the negative and substract it.
