I am going into High School, and I am taking three honors classes (one two semesters long) and the rest are advanced classes, does anyone who took honors classes remember if like the homework was unbearable and did you have a life outside of school? I dont want to just be studying all day, I have a lot of friends. So do they load you up amazingly? Any examples?

You have to be determined to excel. They're workload is about double the regular classes. However, I've heard that once you're place in honors classes, you can't get out of them. Maybe your school is different. Anyways, I am an honor student and I chose to take honor classes because they would pay off when it comes to finding a good college. Hey, NO pain, NO gain! Either you choose friendship now, then you'll become a looser later w/o a good education OR you choose work now, then later you'll get a lot of friends because you are well-off and making BIG money. It's your choice, make the right one!

Okay, I took honors and AP courses in high school. Honors courses aren't that bad. If you were invited into an honors class then you will probably be able to handle the work. Most of the time, honors classes move at a quicker pace than regular classes. You will probably get some homework, but it is nothing compared to AP or IB courses. I know that in one of my honors courses, I had homework practically every night. However, my teacher always offered extra help. You can always go to them before or after school to learn more.
AP and IB courses are different because you are dealing with a college curriculum. You are preparing for an exam that costs $80 to take and can make a hundred dollar difference when you get to college.
The thing about honors classes is that they are a bit more serious. You won't be doing as many crafty or fun projects. I remember that my first AP teacher let her other classes do cultural food activities while the entire time we had to study quietly. Even though you don't get as many projects, yours are usually more fun-filled and exciting. Everyone will be jealous!!

Good luck, and don't be nervous!!

OK...this is just MY opinion, but last year(sophomore year) I figured since I did so well in regular english, I would take honors...well I was wrong...the work load became unbearable, and I and to drop it and go back to regular. Now, mind, I most likely attend a different school than you, with a different curricular, and a different teacher, but that's just how it went for me. I am going to be a junior in a couple weeks and I have no advanced or honors classes on my schedule at all...I don't have much time for the extra work anyways since half my day is going to be consumed by my early childhood education and development classes...Well the best of luck to you Freshman!!!

My senior year, I was taking AP German, AP Calculus BC, AP Physics and Humanities (Honors English). It is true that AP classes will load you up as far as brute study time is concerned. You will need to know/learn how to manage your time well. I was able to do all of my extracirricular activities: marching band, jazz band, service and social clubs. But it all depends on how you look at it. You will not have as much free times that you once had hanging out at the movies/malls. But if you are lucky enough to find friends that are taking similar classes with you, then you doan have to worry about not seeing them. If there was one thing that helped me in the advanced classes, it was group studying--and I always paired up with old friends or make new ones in new groups.

Also, just because you are in an advanced class, it doesnt mean that you would be doing meaningless work like dry problems all day long. Your teachers will try to challenge you with interesting problems and plenty of projects. All in all, advanced classes actually helped me become more social with my peers rather than a hermit. It is a challenging experience, but through it all--when you look back, you realize how better you are as a person.

Don't sweat it. Honors classes just are more thorough. If your in honors and you can handle it then don't worry. In my experience the work in honors is easy. the teachers are nicer cause there ain't no screw ups causing a fraucus, and you get respect from teachers that you don't find in non-honors. Keep in mind that virtually all the only kids in my school who are in honors are in MAGNET (holla).

But I gotta ask YOU something? What do you mean by "advanced courses" if by that you mean AP (Advanced Placement, basically college classes) then watch out cause them classes pack on the work, and studying for hours on end is CRUCIAL. Of course it depends on the subject and your skill level, but still they ain't no walk in the park if your taking two, three at a time.

well freshman year i had four honors classes. the homework level fluctuated. honors classes fluctuate on homework level but AP classes really load you up. however it was not uncommon for me to spend at least three hours doing homework and that's just the minimum. I was up so late one night i think i must have done six to eight hours of homework with only one thirty minute break. so ya the homework can get pretty unbearable sometimes but that only happened to because i got behind on my projects (lesson for you, don't get behind on your projects). you have to factor in sports and and other things like band. but otherwise the homework level went high then low. you should be fine.

Naw, the homework's the same. You just have to pay more attention in class, and maybe a little more studying before tests. Now, AP (advanced placement) classes are a whole different ball game, and you should schedule extra time for homework for those courses. Most people only take AP classes their senior year, if they take any.

It really depends on the class, but from my experience they don't give mountains of homework nightly. Some classes DO give some pretty big projects, but overall you should have time for a social life.

your social life in College will be unbelievable, so dont worry too much about the honors classes.

My sister was in mostly honors classes, and she still had plenty of time for a social life, a job, volunteering, and other extra curricular.

No; it's a matter of time management... ask anyone. It's not that bad at all. I felt like that, but don't worry. You will definetely have a life if u want one, that is. They just teach at a quick rate and stuff, but it works out after a couple of days.
