I agree, but I think many religious and spiritual beliefs have this idea as well - it is not original to christianity.

I agree, Debra, and I admire your faith, which I share. Thanks for speaking out openly about the true Church.
I like this metaphor: God's rules, which at times we think we want to go beyond, are like the chain link fence a good father puts all around his property before he lets his toddler play outside. He is not trying to keep his child away from fun and happiness. He's trying to keep him within the boundaries that are, in fact, best for him. If the child goes out of the yard, to where it looks to him like even more adventure and fun, there are many dangers that the father knows are not really good for the child and could even kill him (like cars driving by, and kidnappers).
So rather than see the fenced in yard as a prison, see it as a place that does allow freedom, because within this area, you can live and play knowing you are safe, and your dad's knowledge and caring is why he wants you to stay there. It's not that he's trying to spoil your good times.

Galatians 5
Live in the Freedom That Christ Provides
7You were running beautifully! Who stopped you from obeying the truth? 8Such influence does not come from the one who calls you. 9A little yeast spreads through the whole batch of dough. 10I am confident âin the Lord that you will take no other view of the matter. However, the one who is troubling you will suffer God’s âjudgment, whoever he is. 11As for me, brothers, if I am still preaching the necessity of âcircumcision, why am I still being persecuted? In that case the offense of the cross has been removed. 12I wish that those who are unsettling you would castrate themselves!
13For you, brothers, were called to freedom. Only do not turn your freedom into an opportunity to gratify your flesh, but through love serve one another. 14For the whole Law is summarized in a single statement: “You must love your neighbor as yourself.” â 15But if you bite and devour one another, be careful that you are not destroyed by each other. 16So I say, live by the Spirit, and you will never fulfill the desires of the flesh. 17For what the flesh wants is opposed to the Spirit, and what the Spirit wants is opposed to the flesh. They are opposed to each other, and so you do not do what you want to do. 18But if you are being led by the Spirit, you are not under the Law.
19Now the works of the flesh are obvious: sexual immorality, impurity, promiscuity, 20idolatry, witchcraft, âhatred, rivalry, jealously, outbursts of anger, quarrels, conflicts, factions, 21envy, murder, âdrunkenness, wild partying, and things like that. I am telling you now, as I have told you in the past, that people who practice such things will not inherit the kingdom of God. 22But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, â 23gentleness, and self-control. There is no law against such things. 24Now those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified their flesh with its passions and desires. 25If we live by the Spirit, let us also be guided by the Spirit. 26Let us stop being arrogant, provoking one another and envying one another.

Some do confine themselves... as some do in other religions as well... putting more on themselves, and others, than is actually called for. I am sure you would not gauge your faith by someone elses faith. So to someone else, you faith, the way you live it, may appear to be more confining than someone elses.
And you have to admit, even Christianity has it's nutjobs.

Amen!
"Enter in through the narrow gate; because wide is the gate, and broad is the way which leads to destruction, and many are those who enter in through it. How narrow the gate, and confined the way which leads to life, and there are few who find it! Matthew 7:13-14

True, Debra, Gods guidelines hedges us in. But I look at the hedges as the arms of His Son Jesus. And Their never so tall that we can't see over.

confinement is to limit one's ability to move forward. all religions seek to control, and thus, confine, the mass of people it reaches. faith has nothing to do with it.
