I understand that john (I think?) is actually standing there communicating and writing down the events as he sees them, but are the events actual events. Should they be taken at face value or are they symbolic examples for the Jews at the time or symbolic events that take place in the future.

Wow LOL ask an easy one like how many angels can dance on a pen?

OK.
John is in the spirit (not in his body). He now sees with spiritual eyes, from a higher dimension (something like us looking at the 2nd dimension).

What he sees he records.

This is part of the problem for us.
He wrote that he saw a beast rise out of the sea.
I am very sure he did see a beast and out of something that looked like an ocean rise out of it.
But the meaning of sea is people
and the meaning of beast is an organization.

Have you ever dealt with AT&T, now thats a beast.
Moble oil, how about the UN now there is a beast.
Now all of these have risen out of the sea of people.
How would you have liked to have been one of the 5 or 10 men who started Moble Oil? and now it floats on a sea of people, offices, crews, ships, stock holders.

Anyway I am saying is that John wrote what he saw but what he saw was not exatly what was.

We have to try to see with his eyes, and ask from God a little wisdom.
It is hard to understand, but not impossable.
for a study of Rev first Read Daniel.

The events are real and some are symbolic and some are not.

Revelation 1:10 By inspiration I came to be in the Lord's day..

It is generally accepted that the Lord's Day is the 1,000 year reign of Christ.

Revelation 22:10 He also tells me, "Do not seal up the words of the prophecy of this scroll, for the appointed time is NEAR."

So, the prophecy was for the future. A thousand years is a day to God, so that would make it approximately 2 days away.

John sees actual events in his visions.

Then he relates them to text to the best of his ability to describe things that are far into the future. Keep in mind that Revelation was written at the end of the First Century.

Actual events; symbolic descriptions

Most of revelations is a book of symbolism. John was not there in body, but in spirit. He is not veiwing everything as actual events. He is veiwing spiritual symbols. Revelations pretains to the past, John's time, and the future.

In the Qur'an, the end of the world will come about when there are no more good Muslims. In order for that to happen, it describes a massive war: the world against the Muslims. Not surprisingly, the war will be lead by the 'children of israel' under a man the Qur'an refers to as djergal. he will mislead everyone at first and people will love and revere him and will not see their mistake until it is too late. When the war is over, the israeli's will have won and everyone that allied themselves with israeli's will be devasated at the criminal country that is israel. By then they will see their mistake and they will notice that the children of israel do not care for anyone but themselves as israel would have betrayed its allies many times. Just like today, no on can say anything against israel. Not even the U.S. After the victory of the war, the world will be destroyed and the criminal israelis will be killed in the most terrible of ways and then there will be the resurrection and the jugement.

In the Bible, under the "resurrection" part, there will be a massive war as well. Lead by, not surprisingly, an israeli guy from israel. this man is referred to as the 'antichrist' and he will be loved and revered by everyone and will take that power to perform atrocities against humankind before everyone realizes their mistake. good christians will be removed from the fighting by something called the 'rapture'. everyone else will remain to be destroyed by the antichrist who will only serve the israelis. he will win the war and in those first moments of his glory, the world will be destroyed.

additional notes:
- in the extreamist form of the jewish religion practiced in israel, only the jewish are considered to be people. everyone else are animals. we only take human form so that the jewish will not be disgusted at us when dealing with us.
- as everyone else are animals made for the jewish, there is a festival in israel where non-jewish people are killed and baked into pies and eaten as a symbol that animals can be eaten and were made only for the jewish. (source: from my acquaintance that live in israel. she also told me that this is practiced by a minority of jews due to its nature but the practice is not repressed or shunned)
- israel refuses to abide by international laws that make complete humane sense if the laws go against their evil plans to take over the world.

P.S: you should read this book: 'protocols of the elders of zion'. it is supposedly fake but the position of israel today is reflected on the pages. it can't be a coincidence.

It's a mythological account of events that never occurred, and when it is the end of the world... revelations will still prove to be false and inaccurate.
