Chickens, I would think. Unless you're in a specialty shop, like an Asian shop. They sell different kinds of eggs, I know. Then there's fish eggs - caviar. But you asked about birds.

Chickens. That is at least what I learned when I was in Elementary School. But it might have changed since then. Even though it wasn't that long ago. I am only 21. So do the Math.

Most common eggs sold it stores are laid by chickens. In some specialty or ethnic stores you may be able to buy eggs laid by, ducks, geese, quail, pigeons, doves, etc.

hens, lay the eggs, chickens are not specific enough, because a male chicken is a rooster, and roosters cannot lay eggs, so your answer is the hen.
