No Martin Luther was not Jewish. He was a Catholic. He did not set out to form a new church. He was trying to get the church to explain some things he had found in the Bible. they refused and he took it to the people. The church began prosecuting him.

Remember at that time there were not Bibles available. The Catholic church kept the one they had in the basement chained to a table.

This would be a good study on the origins of the churches and how they came about. However an understanding of all the circumstances is important and this is not the forum to cover that.

Please feel free to contact me if you would like more of the history.

Martin Luther was a rebel Christian of the 16th century who championed and pioneered the Protestant movement attacking the monopoly of Papacy over the christian community. He started the movement known as Protestant Reformation with his followers who began a large exodus from the Roman Catholic Church. In 1530, the new movement adopted the Augsburg Confession of faith primarily questioning the apostles' supremacy and the concept of 'sin' in the Bible. He discarded King James version of the Bible and said, " When god wants to speak with us, he does not avail himself of an angel but of parents".l

Among 2.2 Billion Christans to-day in the world approximately 83 million which is more than 4.2% of the Christian population.

No. It's not even an urban legend. Martin Luther didn't like Jews very much, but it can't have had much to do with his knowing about them. It was just one of those things: Germans didn't like Jews much even before Alois Schickelgruber (the guy whose stepfather was named Hitler, and who changed his first name too, to Adolph).

He was most definitely not Jewish, and was an anti semite to boot.

The explanation sounds very implausible and is irrelevant.

I don't remember. I didn't really know him that well but I do think someone at Hard Rock Cafe did mention it.

I BELIEVE HE WAS GERMAN. HE WROTE HIS OPINION OF THE JEWS, WHICH WASN'T NICE AND GAVE FUEL FOR HITLER'S HATE FOR THEM LATER IN HISTORY. HIS WORK WAS VERY INSTRUMENTAL TOWARD GETTING AWAY FROM THE CATHOLIC CHURCH.
