It depends entirely on what kind of volunteer work you will be doing. In our organisation, there will always be a measure of paperwork for volunteers to ensure that there is good reporting and continuity when they leave and the staff members continue with the programme. This is necessary, and there will be no more than usual...
I would be a bit worried when there is NO paperwork when you volunteer, in all honesty...

your so cool because i did my volunteer work at an animal shelter. well i dont remember dealing with a lot a paper work, then again i was like 13 or 14, but if your under 18, just bring a guardian and im pretty sure they will tell you if you do need to fill out any paper work. Im not sure where you live but where i live we have the Houston Humane Society, and when they have events, the volunteers always go for free, get free food, and free drinks, and shirts and they feed you breakfast and lunch, they always had k9 fun runs for the dogs it was pretty cool and fun, she look into shelters they are always welcoming volunteers. Good luck!!! :o)'

Hell-no. Who the heck is requiring your social? Did you tell them you are helping them, not the other way around? You may need to prove you're legal, but that would be the only reason they'd need to see it. Show it and take it home, don't leave a copy. Tell them why: you don't trust them with it, since it is not a requirement in CA to show your social when you are helping someone out. Doing all that paper work is a sign that they are lazy and taking advantage of the situation. I'd make some changes. If they don't like it, oh well. They can try to find someone else (whose legal) who is willing to do tons of paper work for free. That's too funny for me. If that's the case, heck, you might as well get a job that pays. You're doing the work of someone who would get paid for the same work.

You have to give your SSN, so they know who you are. If you have any kind of background, or illegal alien, they need to know it.
If you are working around children, there will be a required background check with local police and a requirement of past records of charges of any felonies, criminal cases will keep you from work with kids. I don't know about animals, but, you still will have a background check whereever you go. But, if you have no record, you will be good to go work for free anywhere you want.
