What does the mother put her in? Have you ever seen her wear anything remotely close to that? My girls wear pink all the time, yet they also wear black dresses. Darker colors look better in the winter. If it is for her to wear as a summer dress, than yes, I would find another color. You could always just leave the gift reciept in the box and let her Mother know she can return it if she would like. Just don't be offended if you never see her wearing it.

Nothing is wrong with the dress so long as it's age appropriate in style. It's up to the mum of your niece to decide, not your mother. I'm sure you had both of them in mind when you bought it too. It's old fashioned and an old wives tale not to dress young children in black. Here's a good lesson for future reference and I have lived by it since I heard it myself and that is: Never tell someone what you would like to do, tell them what you've done, and you will only receive positive responses. If you leave the door open for opinions, people are quick to walk through it with their negative views.

everyone is different, they always think that little girls should wear pink because it was so cute (all my family is like that) by the time my baby was born i had enough clothes in pink to last till she would turn 5. i see nothing wrong with a cute little black dress on a little girl.

I think any color you want is fine. Never mind what your mother thinks it's your niece's mother that will decide. My daughter had a little black dress with white color & cuffs and everytime she wore it people always commented on how cute she looked. She was 5.

I don't think there's anything wrong with it.
I don't dislike girls in pink, but I do dislike the notion that little girls should always be wearing bows and flowers and pink and purple.. etc.. I do dress my daughter in "girly" clothes, but it does not comprise her entire warddrobe either.
I think the dress sounds very cute for your niece.

Nothing is wrong with a black dress for a little girl. My daughter who is four now, loves black clothes and I've been dressing her in black (not every day, mind you) since she was two.

I'm sure it looks very cute and elegant! Nothing wrong with a sweet little black dress! Besides, it's only your mum's opinion. If you like it, I'm sure it's just fine!

There's nothing wrong with a black dress for a little girl, it's not like it was form fitting, had spaghetti straps and showed a cleavage.

there's nothing wrong with that but it's not so nice. to be honest with you. pink, white, yellow, purple and many more other beautiful colors u could choose. black is definitely not in my list. they are kids.. for example, ppl paint their kids' room in sweet color like blue or pink but not a black and white one.
black is not ugly but it doesn't show sweetness. it's dull and dark.
I'm just expressing my opinion. but ppl do have different taste.
