There's been a gang of robbers around where I live. They look at names in a phone book (they only steal from people of my ethnicity) and then go rob the house. Do you think these robbers would call our house first?

Well, you could ask to have your phone number taken out of new phone books like have some kind of private number, or (I suggest as a last resort) change your name to something like Mike Smith so that no one can tell your ethnicity by looking at your name in a phone book.

These ideas can prevent future thefts but for the present I have no idea.

Maybe start a neighborhood watch or, if it gets to be too much, move.

I know I come off as simple and cold but that's all I can come up with.

Be a security freak. Always check the doors, windows, etc. Reinforced your doors and windows with new locks. Be aware of new faces in your neighborhood. Always be on the look out. Buy security gadgets like alarms. Buy a gun, but if you don't want to, at least have a mace, a baton, or a knife for self defense. Always have a weapon at each corner of your house, you don't know where these people will be coming from so you need to be ready. And last but not the least, be prepared!

Who knows? Call the police if someone is trying to get in. Give them what they want if they're armed. If they intend to kill you fight back.

2 dogs are way better than one by the way. Mace is highly effective indoors (you could use poisonous (only the poisonous) "Raid wasp and hornet spray" in a pinch. Deadbolt everything. A gun is a naturally good deterent, and a bat or club is both easy to use and great inside. You can also throw gasoline, ammonia, or bleech in their face...

They basically have no rights if they break into your house, you are generally allowed to kill armed intruders (within reason) - check with a law officer for details.

If you're state allows you, get yourself a firearm, preferably a long gun. Also, keep a phone near in case you need to call 911 fast. Then lock all the windows and doors, and close all the curtains so that no one can see through the windows. If possible, put booby traps around and inside your home when you're not at home, and set up cameras to catch them in the act.

Best deterrent -- better than a gun and you won't get busted, A well trained Rottweiler. If your house is invaded, they are fair game for a hungry animal. People fear large powerful dogs and Rots move fast enough to take care of business. Dobi's and German Shepard's are good protection dogs as well (cops use them as intimidation and enforcement methods - works quite well)

If you do shoot an intruder inside your house, make sure you kill them so there is only one side of the story. Or some slick lawyer will make them the victims.
