Spanish comes from the mother language Latin, spoken by the ancient Romans in the Roman Empire. They conquered most of Europe and thus several languages have a common origin and are more or less similar, depending on other languages that later had also influence on them.
Romance languages, as they are called are:
- Spanish
- Italian
- Portuguese
- French
- Romanian
- A language spoken by some people in Switzerland: Rumansch.
Besides these languages, within Spain there are other languages that come from Latin too:
- The official language of Spain: Castilian
- Gallego
- Catalan

Portuguese, as a example take a look at the name of an Almodovar film in both languages:
¿Qué he hecho yo para merecer esto?
Que fiz eu para merecer isto?
qué = que
he hecho = fiz
yo = eu
para = para
merecer = merecer
esto = isto

Another example:
"(1)La atracción gravitacional de la Luna y la del Sol son causantes de las mareas"
"(1) A atração gravitacional da Lua e a do Sol causam as marés"

the structure is exactly the same. The words change a bit:
la = a
de la = da
del = do
y = e
de las = das ... or in this case "as"

Italian and French are also close to spanish:
L'attraction gravitationnelle de la Lune et celle du Soleil sont responsables pour les marées (i am guessing my French is not very good!!)

Italian, Portugese, Romanian, French are all similar because they have Roman roots and are now known as Romance languages. In contrast, English and German come from another origin.
