Depends on what rattles your nerves. If it's what people say or do that gets you tense (because you think differently than they do, or have a different opinion than they do) then you can quickly learn not to let that bother you by simply realizing that everyone in this world has the right to think the way they do, and if they choose to think differently than you, it's probably because of ignorance on their part. Your mind set should be that you wish you could help them, but unless they ask for your help, it's probably best that they learn on their own, and that you calmly go on about your life confident in the wisdom of your ways.

In most instances, these people will find the error of their thinking and benefit from those realizations. In other instances, you might, by chance, find out that they were right and you were wrong. It can happen. No one is perfect or right all the time. In those rare instances, I'm sure you'll take the appropriate steps to ensure that you benefit from your newly gained knowledge.

I think that generally being at peace with the world will allow you to enjoy a relaxed state of mind and not allow your nerves to get you on edge. For example, I think I heard sometime ago that President Bush said he doesn't like brocolli. I couldn't care less. I love brocolli and often make a meal of it. If it's true that he doesn't like it, that's his problem, not mine. I don't let it rattle my nerves or ruin my day or my life. I don't feel an obligation to get him to change his ways or see things my way. If he doesn't like brocolli, he can do without it. It'll leave more for me.

What's right for one person is not necessarily right for another. Live and let live. I got a clearer understanding of the value of that saying years ago when I found out that my boss didn't want a piece of strawberry shortcake. When I asked him why, he explained that he couldn't eat strawberries because his body couldn't handle them. He added that if he ate straberries, he would stop breathing, and if he didn't receive medical attention right away, he would die within minutes. That was scary. It made me realize how little I knew about what's good or bad for other people. Not that I ever thought I did know that anyway.

In my mind, life is partly a matter of choices. You make yours, and I'll make mine, and we'll see who ends up happier as a result. Interestingly enough, it could be that even though we make different choices, we both end up equally happy because what's right for you is not necessarily right for me. The net of it is that no one should let their nerves suffer as a result. Live and let live.

Lie down in a dimly lit, silent room and start taking deep breaths - concentrate on your breathing. Think about your big toe on your right foot. Tense it up and then release it, so you can feel it relaxing. Then do it to your other toes on your right foot, and then move on to your left foot. Move up your legs and arms to your neck and head, tensing each muscle briefly before relaxing it. Concentrate on keeping everything else relaxed but that one muscle you're tensing. After you get to the top of your head your whole body should be relaxed. If you're still not relaxed, start it again. It can take up to an hour - don't rush it. Make sure each muscle is totally relaxed before moving on to the next one. It's blissful.

if you are getting anxious and panicked to the point where it is interefering with your life and are having problems focusing on things such as work, family, self, etc, then you may want to talk to a doctor about getting an anti-anxiety medication such as xanax or ativan. these meds can help calm you down quickly. but they are highly addictive and must be used only when needed (only when you are tense/anxious).

you may also want to try something such as yoga or tai chi or meditation - these techniques may help to teach you how to calm yourself down by teaching you good deep breathing techniques. you can use these breathing techniques every time you feel stressed and it may help to make you feel better.

I know a lot of methods from performing when I play the violin.

Breate in for seven seconds, hold it in for seven seconds, let it out for seven seconds. Get oxygen into your body.

Also I heard eating bananas helps >>.

And uhh...I always get this feeling like I'm falling from a high place, so it helps to ground myself. I just dig my feet into the floor and grip something tightly.

And obviously if you think it's a real problem, see a doctor. Maybe you need to be medicated.

Take a really HOT shower. As hot as you can stand it, Wrap your self up in a big robe or blanket. Then drink a cup of warm milk or hot chocolate. Chamomile tea helps too. However, if this is a reoccuring event, and you are under stress, then a trip to the m.d for a short term prescription would'nt hurt.

You should take up yoga, do meditation, go to a spa, get a massage or listen to music. Anything that relaxes you, and helps you forget about all of your problems for a while is the best technique for you.

Take a couple of deep breaths and exhale deeply, next tense up your body while breathing slowly. Start by slowly relax, each arm, then each leg then all of you. Now take another deep breath and slowly exhale.

Close your eyes and breath deeply through your nose. To drown out any outside noise put your fingers in your ears and listen to yourself breath. It will take the focus off the tension and make you concentrate on your breathing. I do this and I have anxiety disorder.
