-They think they're better than you just because you're behind the register. (and don't tell me it's because I'm a lowlife and I need a better job, I'm only 18!)
-They insist on throwing the clothing they don't want all over the floor and knocking everything off hangers and shelves.
-They blame you and get mad at you for enforcing company policies, as if it is your fault.
-They don't leave even minutes after the closing announcement is made, several times, when it is obvious that we are trying to close the store. This is by far the most enraging behavior. They get to go home at the end of their work day, why shouldn't we? As if we having nothing better to do then stand there all night and wait for them to decide to check out?

Any insight/sympathy is welcome!

-frustrated cashier

You're right..I worked in customer service for an airline for 31years. Those customers just are stupid and rude..Sometimes I used to get thru one of them by thinking...Thank God I only have to deal with you for 5 minutes...you have to live with yourself all the time....
Just remember though, there are some really good people out there too---it's just a little more difficult to see them. When it's time to close...just 'mistakenly 'turn off the lights for a couple of minutes.

I think most people go shopping when their in a hurry or a bad mood. Sometimes their budget puts a hamper on what they want to buy and can't afford. They may even have to bring their children whom have a short attention span. Thats when your in store items get misplaced. Waiting in a long line does not help. So, by the time your customer gets to your register their already Late for whatever...I wouldn't take their attitude personally. Just smile and you'd be suprised at the response you might get back. There's going to be alot more people out in the world just like that before you retire someday. Maybe you'll learn some people skills from this job that will help you in the future.

Yes, they think they're better than you.

No, I don't believe they think you're a low life. I believe they understand you are young and inexperienced.

And, for the reasons of customers throwing things and blaming you for their unhappiness and frustration, is why that store hired you.

They counted on your charm and good humor and friendliness to help disburse some of the venom without it affecting your personal life. They also counted on you to know the difference.

If your retail employer doesn't have the resources to help you sort through some of the daily encounters you have, without it becoming personal, then I suggest you look elsewhere, but keep a big chunk of this experience under your belt.

Clothing stores usually have the same scenario; People making a mess, complaining about this or that to the cashier and in the process holding up an already long line. It sucks shopping for clothes so I can imagine working at a clothing store! If i were you, I'd look for a job elsewhere and save yourself all this stress. Just keep in mind that most jobs will have their fair share of customers from hell. Good luck.

I've been working retail for about 20 years now and it doesn't change - doesn't matter what you are selling. I'm in middle management and they don't treat you any different if you are further up the chain. (usually worse as you get all the escalated complaints too) I can't offer you any insight as just as I think I've seen the worse someone comes up with something new but don't feel like the Lone Ranger.

Edit to add: and the worst are not poor people on a limited budget but the higher incomes who think they are "special" upper class.

Not every customer is like that. Even when you have a a s s h o l e of a customer try to keep your cool and remain respectful because then the other customers will appreciate you even more and you never know if your boss is watching to see how you would handle a difficult customer.

24/7? Then how come a closing announcement is being made?

There are customers who have no life or have a miserable life and they want to take it out on others. As you go through life you are going to meet a lot more in different occupations.

YOU ARE RIGHT (not sympathy or empathy, just a fact)

It's an important lesson about one aspect of the American publics character.

It is a worthwhile point to remember that there are a whole bunch of people who are reasonable, no?

"The customer is always right". But, what I understand is that, they are abusing these saying. Be cool and just concentrate on your daily routine. No matter how rude they are, a day will pass through that you are the winner. Good luck

I know what you mean. I don't work at a store, but my dad is rude to people who work at stores. He can never find anything for himself, and always needs one of the workers to help him find what he's looking for. I tell him they probably don't memorize where everything is and he can probably find it just as fast.
