I was born and raised in New York City. I have lived in Manhattan all my life, and I can tell you that violent crime is a very, very rare event in NYC. The police statistics will support my experience.

No, BUT, only been there once almost a year to the day before 9/11/01. Just decided to go there for a girl in upstate New York, a town called Geneva in the Finger Lakes region. That didn't work out the next morning I was there with her, she and her "ex" woke me up and told me to leave because she wanted her "ex" back. I walked back to the "downtown" area of Geneva (about 10 miles) and a cop picked me up within the city limits and took me to the police station where I had my parents (in Washington state) wire me money to get back to Washington, instead I went the rest of the way to NYC from Geneva and spent the night in downtown NYC by Times Square. My experience in NYC was walking a couple blocks realizing (at night anyways) there were at least 3-4 cops on foot per block. (Again, this was just about a year to the day BEFORE 9/11.) So, that seems to be the main reason why I'm not a victim of a violent crime in NYC.

The worst crime that ever happened to me in New York was that I got a glove and a half-drunk bottle of water taken from one of my coat pockets while on the subway. Use common sense and I doubt you would run into trouble.

Yes I have,I live in NYC and when I was 16 I was stabbed in the back of my neck and robbed by 4 guys.Over jewelry, they grabbed my earrings out my ears.Went down my shirt and snatched my gold chain and left me on the ground.People saw everything as it happened and walked the other way. When the train came some got off and a few walked past me.No one helped but in a way I understand it's a scary situation. The only way they let me go was I lied and screamed I'm pregnant and was thinking they would spare me and they did. They ran off and left me there.I'm ok and life has to go on.
