Never. And I've walked around "seedy" places like LB and Hollywood in the daytime with no problems at all. I usually drive at night, but that's a simple precaution to make.

Crime in L.A. is a completely overblown stereotype. Most of the violence is drug and gang related, meaning if you're not involved in any of that, the chances of them attacking you are slim. Purely random acts of violence are an extremely rare occurence indeed.

I suspect the reputation is perpetuated by the same clueless out-of-staters who have been to California once or twice in their life (as tourists, no less), and somehow derive from their three days here that the entire population of San Francisco is gay, San Diegans are 100% descended from illegal immigrants, and all of L.A. is a crime-ridden, toxic wasteland.

No, unless you count the time when a C.H.I.P. ticketed me for jaywalking on a side street off of Hollywood Blvd. He whipped out his ticket book with lightening speed when I told him that I was a tourist from New York. From under his helmet and behind his shades, he quipped, "I want you to go home and tell them that we have laws in L.A." What an A--hole!
