I would like to be a doctor, but what should my undergrad major be? I trying to chose between chemistry and chemical engineering. I am afraid of getting a chemistry degree because I do not believe their will be to many job opportunities available if I am unable to get into medical school.

In either of these areas you will be ahead of the pack that chooses the Biology route. In my area a chemistry degree will give you many opportunities in industry, and chemical engineering has many opportunities also. Others have pursued degrees in allied health fields (nursing, medical technology etc.) These areas offer many opportunities if you do not get into med school on the first shot. Also, these areas offer you many opportunities for part-time flexible work while in med school. Also, several doctors that I know recommend the following : a business degree with the classes needed to take the MCAT and qualify for med school. As you can see there are many roads you can travel. If you feel comfortable with chemistry, it is a good route to take with opportunities available if plans change.

Biology is a good major and you could teach if you can't cut the grade for medicine. The information you learn is also useful in the profession. However, if you can understand enough advanced chemistry to major in it and you can get good grades you should not have difficulty with the other pre-med courses. It is helpful if you learn to take tests well too. Scoring well on the m-cat is very important. Good luck.

You should major in whatever you're interested in; not all the best kids in my med school class majored in Bio or chem. The advantage of majoring in Bio is that then you have a heads up on the first year courses, and you don't have to take a whole slew of calsses to fit your major requirements and pre-reqs for med-school. Beyond the first year of med school though, all science and non-science majors are equal.

Seriously, college is likely the last time it is this easy for you to get educated in anything else but medicine; if you are going to commit your life to medicine, take this oppoutunity to explore other things before you no longer have the time. I wish I did!

My brother majored in Biology. He then got his Masters in Forensic Science before heading off to Med School to become a Surgeon.

Go with Chemical Engineering. It would allow a better job chance and you get to work with medicines.
