I never thought about that, but whenever someone tells me to smile it usually makes me laugh unless I'm in a really crappy mood. But I actually got the scoop from a guy about when men do & say stuff like that, it's so the next time they see you, you will remember, and smile, and trying to act all happy so they will spend time with you. But if you think about it, that's just another control aspect, I don't think that their time or attention is any more important than mine, so why do they? Are they gonna go out of their way to smile and act all hapy to see me the next time (if) we meet? I doubt it. And IF I allow a man to spend any time with me he should be happy for it. No, I'm not conceited, or a diva, or what ever, but I grew up with 7 brothers, and after two really crappy relationships, I think P.I.S.S. on that double standard, they arent any better than I. My time, feelings, and everything about me is important too, and men need to recognize! Anyways, I'll get off the soapbox now....

A smile is an acknowledgement....
Sorry some guys are like that .. Demanding a smile because they are insecure with the situation and a smile breaks the ice....? A smile signals forward movement ,a sign to proceed, when we are face to face , A kinda , "come on" or "Go ahead "
You don't have to smile if you don't want to .....but it would be nice if the right situation came up .... Right ?

Everybody always looks better when they smile.
Especially a pretty girl, so just smile.... you must be a cutie!
And smiling conduces a good time & feeling of warmness.
Don't think of it as such a bad thing, unless you think your face is gonna crack. It was just another Human's attempt to reduce the coldness in the world, you know.
I just keep smiling, makes people think I am crazy and they stay away on their own! LOL Na, I just like to smile. A smile is an amazing thing, by definition. If you read some literature on smiling you would know why we smile & while others try to get you too. It's VERY INTERESTING!

It's quite simple, really.
Men are very visual creatures.
If they are at all interested in you, and request a smile, It completes their visual picture and sends the immediate signal whether you are their type (I say type, but that should include their vision of an ideal) and if they could even hope to compete. Men are very much aware of what their male competition might be.
So, if you hear a shout from some distance away to smile, then my advice would be to turn on some charm even if they're not your 'type'. You never really know who their friends might be.

I get that a lot too. It's a little annoying, but I think they're just trying to be friendly. Maybe they think you're sad and just want to cheer you up a bit. It's harmless really. Even if you aren't mad/sad/upset, sometimes you might look that way. And no one likes to see someone upset, even if it's someone they don't know.

Some men think women are here to beautify the world, and think anything other than a smile means we're upset with them or too smart for them.

Wow, I don't have an answer to this, but it happens to me too. It used to happen more often, but recently I was waiting on Church Street after work for my son to pick me up, I was freezing, not happy to have to wait for a ride, and doesn't some bum walk by me and tell me to turn my frown upside down!! Well, if I hadn't been afraid for my safety, I would have told him where to go!

I get it all the time, people say I always look mad, I never thought about it until you asked. It's usually older men too. Maybe they are intimidated.

Men like it when girls smile. Some are more brazen than others in achieving this end.

Many men think that women are there just for their viewing pleasure. They have a lot of nerve, don't they?
