There has been controversy about China's policy of returning people fleeing N Korea, but no discussion about how the US returns Cuban immigrants who are caught at sea.

I think anyone desperate enough to cross an ocean in a raft to be an American should be welcomed here.

i agree. i'm cuban, and i was in miami during the height of the whole raft thing. the thing that is important not to forget, is that the US coast gaurd doesn not simply return the cuban immigrants to cuba. they spray them with fire hoses, and in some cases shoot at them, then they are taken to guantanamo.

the cuban refugees are allowed to stay, if they make it to shore, so the coast guard does its damndest to make sure they don't make it (in many cases)

In both cases, the governments should refuse admission as the illegals only become a liability to the nation. It is a domestic problem and best left to the people to sort out their own problems. If you disagree with the government, you should seek to change the government, not hide in another country. Does it do any good for your nation, culture or customs...no, it simply means that you are being swallowed into another society. I live in China...I am an American...and I agree totally with the position of the Chinese government. Too many responsibilities are shifted to others. The Revolutionary War is an example of how a few people could change their destiny against a monarchy that had dominated India, a large part of Africa and many islands. Escapism is not an answer to the problem. However this refers to majorities, not minorities such as the Hmong or some of the African minorities that faced genocide. It refers to the North Koreans and the Cubans especially...there are no minorities there. We have absorbed enough and we should be more realistic towards these 'poor, beaten-down' refugees. It is their own country...solve their own problems.

Looking at how horrible cuba is at the moment I can see why those people are fleeing. I agree if they are that desperate and we know how bad that place is why send them back to probably die. After all they were trying to escape and the government will probably punish them on return.

i think they should let everyone stay or nobody. its not fair people from certain countries get different treatment.
