3. act like you have a chip on your shoulder and randomly glare at horrible taxi drivers and annoying people on the street but not anything harsh enough to start a riot
4. dont look at buildings, street performers, a woman laying on a mattress reading a book on the sidewalk in her underwear, if you would normally stand and gauk, ignore it
5. buy a metrocard and know how to to swipe the freakin thing at the turnstile and only hold onto the poles in the subway car with your hand, not wrapping your whole body around it unless youre stripper and working for tips
6. be polite, and conscious of the personal space of the other 8 million people sharing this city with you
7. never smile

the best piece of advice, apart from understanding your way around before you set out, is to walk around with purpose. i.e. don't stand on a crowded street corner agonizing over a map- it screams "I don't know where I'm going!!!" but really, the city isn't much to worry about, as long as you use your common sense- dress appropriately; if you're a female, avoid low-cut, extra-tight clothes, unless you want male attention from mumbling creepy men... which I'm guessing you wouldn't. And if you're a woman, be careful where you walk and when- some streets may not seem safe to you, so go with your gut, backtrack, and take a different route. Many of the streets are numbered and the rest are mostly parallel in Manhattan, so it's really not too hard to figure out. Also, the buses are extremely convenient, and tend to be located where you need to go, so take advantage of public transit, just remember to have money ready (not too much though). If you're a male these rules apply as well, but coming from a female, I think it's fairly obvious that being careful is extra-important for a female. Well, that's my advice! I hope I helped!

Walk quickly, don't look up at all of the buildings, and just ignore all of the people around you... they should appear as nothing more than shadows to avoid. Always be aware of your surroundings though, just don't look nervous or anything, relax, but still look really busy and like you are in a rush.

Don't look at the buildings, put a smirk on your face and act like everyone in the world is wasting your time.

Never pull your map out on the street - Figure out where you're going and have a plan how to get there.
