When you are standing up, your abdominal muscles are tighter - they work with your back muscles to keep you balanced and standing up straight.

When you are sitting down, those muscles relax, and you slouch a little. Your organs get a little bit crunched for space, and they puff out the abdomen from inside. This isn't fat, and can be helped by sitting up straighter.

Your stomach gets big because your slouching when your sitting down. A good way to get rid of it is to do sit-ups. Sit ups are really great at getting rid of the fat in your stomach it also builds muscles. You can do push ups. Running is good too. But I would have to say that sit ups are the best way to get rid of stomach fat.

When you stand, your stomach is not becoming that flat. You just think it is. Same principle holds true for the back of your wrist. TRy it. You could try sit ups for firming. I've also found that if the problem (excess belly) goes on for too long, it becomes harder to get rid of it.
