a doctor told me it is virtually impossible to get cancer from smoking when you are younger than your late 40s, but i can't help worrying... doctors i have seen since then have dismissed me as a hypochondriac...

I'm sorry but your doctor doesnt give out good information. I had to have tests for lung cancer just from passive smokeing and I'm 18. Cancer isn't something restricted to age! Go back to your doctor and if he wont send you for tests or an x-ray at the least, go and see another one. My doctor said the same thing, that i cancer probably wouldnt develop in someone so young so i saw another and they sent me for scans 2 days later.

You can get it at any age. It's more likely to be an infection, I had chest pains and stopped smoking again today, the pains have gone already after just one day. The good news is that the body is incredible at mending itself, otherwise why would we bother to quit? People really do get better once they've stopped smoking, this is why it's such good news. I've decided to never give up giving up however often I fail, I won't be beaten for ever. Good luck to you whatever you decide.

What your doctor told you is a lie. ANYONE can get lung cancer, and your chances are SEVERELY INCREASED by being a smoker. I urge you to stop as soon as possible. By being a smoker for 12 years you have almost certainly damaged your body to an extent. Sorry to be so harsh with you, but i'm trying to tell it like it is for your own good.

You should research that, but you should SERIOUSLY consider quitting smoking to avoid further damaging your lungs, because at an early age of 28 you can get emphysema, which can just as well kill you by the time your in your thirties. Food for thought.

insist on a chest xray.

did you know that it takes 3 months to reprogramm your brain into anon smoker, there are smoking receptors which develop when you have smoked for 2 yrs. these receptors sleep if you dont smoke for 3 months, but one cigarette and they are awake and you have to start all over again. the patches are good and you can buy nicotine lozengers too (cheaper than patches), its easier than you think. its the constant i want to smoke i want to smoke thinking about it all day for the first week or so it gets easier and keep busy. it is mostly all in the mind. good luck. to put your mind at rest get that xray.

It is possible and the doctor that gave you that information is a moron! My dad died at age 45 from lung cancer, and I have cared for patients younger than that with lung cancer. Please continue to go to doctors for follow up. God Bless.

The doctor who said you could not get it at a young age should re train. Go see another doctor and get checked out.
