the stereotypical canadian accent has the speaker saying something almost like "aboot" but not quite. Just like the seterotypical boston accent says "yard" as "Yahd" people rely on the broadest assumptions and generalize. but it is based in some level of differnece in actual perceived pronunciation.

aboot is not part of the typical canadian accent

there are far more canadians who do NOT pronounce it that way, than those who do

thats like saying that all americans pronounce the word yellow by saying "yeller"... a few do, but most dont

I'll take this one since I grew up in Mich. People know they are saying "about", but it's the accent. I grew up in Michigan, and I guess it has some how trickled down here (the accent) because sometimes when we say , for example, "Let's go in the house". it sounds like "hoouse", or "howse" maybe.,Anyway, it has that Canadian accent to it every now and then. But I love our neighbors to the north, and the ones to the south too, for that matter.

Not all Canadians do, but I've heard some say it. Sorry, but even in Ottawa.

Why do people think all Canadians say it? It's a characature, just like assuming that all people in California say "dude." Some do, most don't.

Because most Canadians on TV or in person say "aboot" though sometimes it's "aboat"

The "OW" does not seem to be pronounced in certain areas of Canada. Instead of out and about it sounds like "oot and aboot". eh?
