They have a high calorie content. Seriously, do you have any idea how many calories are in a 32 oz cup of soda?

Even diet soda... the sodium content makes you retain water.

Carbonation is not what makes soda fattening. It's the number of calories and specifically sugar calories that come in soda that make it add up for most soda-loving Americans.

Sugar

Sodas like Coca-Cola and Pepsi are loaded with corn syrup, which is pretty much the same as sugar (arguably even worse). If you don't exercise the sugar off, it turns into fat.

Non-sweetened carbonated drinks like club soda are not fattening.

Its the sugar. HOWEVER, its not even real sugar, its high fructose corn syrup, which is worse than sugar. America grows so much corn, too much corn actually, that it is made into sugar because a) it is much more cheaper to produce than cane sugar and b) it can be mass produced (from the high abundance of corn). My suggestion is, try to stay away from all drink with high fructose corn syrup as well as FAKE SUGAR (these are the worst things ever!!!). Instead, drink fruit juices (beware, some fruit juices even contain corn syrup), or beverages with REAL sugar.

Sugar. Empty Calories.

Not all carbonated drinks are fattening. Only the ones with calories. They a like anything else with calories.... take in more than you burn, you get fat. Take in less than you burn, you lose weight. Take in the same amount as you burn, you stay at the same weight.
